Human Caused Disasters: Hazardous Material Spills
Hazardous materials are chemical substances, which if releases or misused can pose a threat o the environment or health.  These chemicals are used in industry, agriculture, medicine, research and consumer goods.

Hazardous chemicals come in the form of explosives, flammable and combustible substances, poisons and radioactive materials.  These substances are most often releases as a result of transportation accidents or because of chemical accidents in plants.

However, with the recent events of September 11, 2001, it is important to be more knowledgeable about hazardous materials, what they, how they can affect you and what you should do to protect yourself and your family.

As part of the services of the Charlotte Fire Department, select firefighters are specially trained to handle hazardous material.  In the event of a major spill or emergency, their actions will be directed by Fire or Emergency Management Officials.

For more information on Residential, Commercial or Transportation Hazards visit the Charlotte Fire Department web site.
