Human Caused Disasters: Aircraft Accidents

Aircraft Accidents
Since the opening of Charlotte/Douglas Airport in 1952, Charlotte has experienced three major and several minor aircraft accidents and mishaps.

The need to deal with these accidents prompted the Charlotte Fire Department to equip Station 17, located near the airport, with apparatus to specifically deal with aircraft fires and crashes.

The three major accidents occurred in July 1964, September 11, 1974 and July 2, 1994.  To read about these incidents visit the historic fire site.  There have been other incidences involving both large and small aircraft.

Airport Security
Charlotte/Douglas International Airport has always provided top security at its facility.  Today, as an international point of entry, Airport Law Enforcement work closely with both Federal and State agencies to ensure the safety of passengers departing from Charlotte.
