Animal Statistics

In an ongoing effort to educate the public about the magnitude of the pet overpopulation problem, CMPD Animal Care & Control publishes statistics showing how many animals come into the shelter every month. The data is given for all animals and broken down further for dogs and cats.

The city of Charlotte operates on a fiscal year which runs from July 1 to June 30. Therefore, all data is presented from the same time period.

Fiscal Year 2009

Animal Care & Control has worked with rescue groups for several years, and they rescue many animals from the shelter. In previous years, these transactions were classified as adoptions, but as of fiscal year 2010, rescue groups are no longer charged an adoption fee. These transactions now are classified as transfers, and you will see this category appear on the statistical report for FY10.
