Licensing

All dogs, cats and ferrets four months and older residing in Charlotte, Mint Hill, Pineville and the unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County must be licensed annually. Proof of a current rabies vaccination from your veterinarian is required to purchase a license.

License fees vary depending on whether your pet is spayed or neutered. Fertile animals are $30 per year. Sterile animals are $10 for a one-year license or $25 for a three-year license. Multi-year licenses are available only for sterile animals that have a three-year rabies vaccination.

License fee exemptions apply in the following situations:

    • Senior citizens 62 years of age and older can receive a free license for their pet, if the animal has been sterilized.
    • If your animal has medical problems that make it unable to withstand the sterilization procedure and you provide a statement from your veterinarian, you can purchase a license for $10.
      • Any disabled owner of a dog which is used for seeing, hearing or assistance purposes can receive a free license, if the animal has been sterilized.
        • Owners of show animals can receive licenses for $10, if they show proof of participation in at least three nationally-recognized shows within the past 12 months.

On March 7, 2005, CMPD Animal Care & Control contracted with PetData, Inc. to manage the animal licensing program for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.
